Whirlow Hall Farm Humanist Wedding | Lucy + Nathan
Lucy and Nathan’s family-focused Whirlow Hall Farm humanist wedding ceremony really did have it all: such a sense of heartfelt commitment, Sheffield sunshine and a surprise brass band.
After 13 years together, Lucy and Nathan never saw marriage as a missing element of commitment, since they are already raising a family together. Over time though, the idea of celebrating their family, their love and their relationships with all their guests appealed more and more. The day was therefore as much about everyone there as it was the couple themselves, particularly all the children who had come along. It was a big part of the reason why Lucy and Nathan had chosen Whirlow Hall Farm, since they’ve enjoyed it so much with their two.
‘We had so many lovely comments about the ceremony, focusing on how genuine and personal it felt – some said it changed their idea of what a ceremony can be altogether. It was hands down the best day of our lives.’

Setting all your hopes on an outside humanist wedding ceremony is always a gamble at the best of times, but thankfully in Lucy and Nathan’s case it paid off. We had glorious Sheffield sunshine to enjoy – even to the extent suncream was being shared out amongst guests. I have to say that’s rare in South Yorkshire!
The aid of a microphone settled any noise issues coming from the neighbouring playground and Lucy and Nathan’s family and friends were wonderfully responsive throughout the ceremony itself, with much laughter and more than few tears. The best thing from my perspective was seeing how relaxed Lucy and Nathan were, really delighting in a ceremony that we had put so much thought into.
Finally, at the very end once I’d presented them to everyone, the ever fabulous Back Chat Brass appeared as a surprise for the groom. The looks on everyone’s faces was absolutely priceless and soon enough the entire wedding party were up on their feet and dancing. Such a joyful way to finish any wedding ceremony.
‘Thank you for being such an expert writer, editor, whip-cracker, organizer, speaker, distracter of daughters and calmer of worried grooms – such a big part of making it all work. We’re eternally grateful and will recommend you whenever we get chance.’

This isn’t my first Whirlow Hall Farm humanist wedding ceremony and hopefully it won’t be my last. It’s such a flexible DIY wedding venue, with an outside ceremony space, a spacious barn area and all the other amenities at the farm itself. The farm is actually an educational trust, providing all sorts of opportunities for many local children and young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds and the inner city. So by hiring the venue for your wedding, you’re also doing good as well.
‘Oh my goodness! I love you both! And Family M, that was the most beautiful ceremony I have EVER been to. So you!’ ‘Fab day guys! What a very meaningful ceremony – so much love…and crying!!! Congratulations and lots of love.’
